Kigali, April 21, 2025 , President Paul Kagame has paid a heartfelt tribute to Pope Francis following the pontiff’s passing on Easter Monday at the age of 88. The President described the late Pope as a "moral voice of compassion, humility, and global solidarity" and acknowledged his significant efforts in mending relations between the Catholic Church and Rwanda.
In his statement, President Kagame said Pope Francis will be remembered for his courage in acknowledging the role of the Catholic Church during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. He credited the pontiff’s leadership for ushering in “a new era of fruitful relations” grounded in truth, reconciliation, and a shared commitment to the wellbeing of the Rwandan people.
Pope Francis’ formal apology in 2017 for the Church’s involvement during the genocide was a turning point in Rwanda-Vatican relations. President Kagame welcomed the apology at the time and highlighted it as a gesture that showed the Pope’s humility and respect for justice.
The President shared his message of condolence through his official social media platforms, expressing solidarity with the global Catholic community and all those mourning the loss of a transformative leader.
Pope Francis died peacefully in his residence at the Vatican after battling a respiratory illness. His papacy, which began in 2013, was marked by reforms, social justice advocacy, and a commitment to healing historical wounds.
